Natural Hair Care Licensure Course

If you are looking to start your career, open your own business, or go "legit". LYS School is approved by the State of Illinois to provide licensure courses for Hair Braiders. The Hair Braiders License covers all-natural hair care!

Join more than 150 students who graduated and have received their license after joining our program.

The Natural Hair Care course will teach you crucial knowledge and skills such as salon management, salesmanship, client consultation, sanitation, and disorders and diseases of the hair and scalp. 


We will teach students the following style types: Single Braids with and without extensions, Cornrows with and without extensions, Feed-in braids, Twists with or without extensions, multiple strands, Hair Locking, Crochets and Weaving/sew-ins.


We will not be teaching you things like how to chemically color hair, chemically straighten hair, permanent wave styles, chemically bleach growing human hair, or how to cut growing human hair. These are things you might learn at a cosmetology school!


You pick your "shifts" for class. Keep in mind that you need at least 300 hours to graduate so the more shifts you pick up, the quicker you graduate and can Launch Your Success! 


We also have a weekend classes available! 

You can attend any and all of the available sessions. We offer an easy online platform tied to your school email to view and manage your school schedule. This platform also allows you clock-in and out.

Application/Registration fee: $300


Program tuition: $1800


Mannequin & Tools: $50 - $200 (MUST BE REQUESTED)

Curriculum

At least 200 hours will be spent on practical. You will have the opportunity to practice on clients, not just mannequins. We spend a lot of time teaching you skills and techniques required of a natural hair stylist.

THEORY (100 clock hours)

PRACTICAL (200 clock hours)

35 hours of Basic Training:

  • history of hair braiding;

  • disinfection and sanitation;

  • bacteriology;

  • disorders and diseases of the hair and scalp;

  • personal hygiene, public health; and

  • professional ethics.


35 hours of Related Concepts:

  • tools and equipment;

  • basic styling knowledge;

  • client consultation and face shapes;

  • growth patterns;

  • braid removal and scalp care;

  • styles and sectioning; and

  • client education, pre-care, post-care, home care and follow-up services.


30 hours of Business Practices:

  • the Act and this Part, including sanitary standards;

  • salon management;

  • human relations and salesmanship; and

  • Workers' Compensation Act.

200 hours of Practices and Procedures:

  • single braids with and without extensions;

  • cornrows with and without extensions;

  • feed-in braids;

  • twists with or without extension;

  • hair locking;

  • weaving/sewn-in;

  • crochet

  • other procedures as they relate to hair-braiding; and

  • product knowledge as it relates to hair braiding.


  • A student may practice on the public only after completing 35 hours of general theory, practical application and technical application instruction

LYS School understands that you may have other life commitments, so we offer a flexible schedule.

Classes are from 9am to 5pm
Early morning sessions available as early as 8am
Evening sessions available until 7pm
Weekend only classes (Saturdays and Sundays 9am-5pm) – MUST BE REQUESTED

Requirement to get a Hair Braiding License

To be qualified to receive a license as a hair braider in the State of Illinois, you have meet the following qualifications:


  • File an application on forms provided by the Department; 


  • Pay the required fees; 


  • Be at least 16 years of age;


  • Be beyond the age of compulsory school attendance or have received a certificate of graduation from a school providing secondary education, or the recognized equivalent of that certificate;


  • Have completed a program consisting of a minimum of 300 clock hours or a 10 credit hour equivalency of instruction, as defined by rule, in a licensed cosmetology school teaching a hair braiding curriculum or in a licensed hair braiding school as 100h of theoritical knowledge and 200h of practical application.


By the time you complete our curriculum you might be requiere to pass a Board of certificate in Illinois State.
