Natural Hair Care Teacher Licensure Course

LYS School is dedicated to preparing student instructors for the Natural Hair Care and Braiding teaching profession. This is achieved through the practical, theoretical, and psychological application of foundational knowledge and skills.

LYS School is committed to training the student instructor for the field Natural hair care and braiding teaching profession through practical, theoretical, and psychological application of applied basic knowledge and skills. As defined by IDFPR Act of 1985 section 1.4, "Licensed hair braiding teacher" means an individual licensed by the Department to practice hair braiding and to provide instruction in the theory and practice of hair braiding to students in an approved hair braiding school. 


LYS School prepares each student instructor to pass the state board examination. The student will achieve this in two steps: Observer ship of consultant stylists’ techniques and Supervised teaching of students in the basic hair braider program. 


After completion of the required examination and graduation, the qualified students will be offered positions as assistant teacher consultant for 1 to 2 years at the LYS School and an opportunity to partner with the school.

500h program tuition: $3500 


600h program tuition: $4000


Mannequin & Tools: $50 - $200 (MUST BE REQUESTED) 


Deposit = $500 (required at registration) 


Full/ complete payment due on first day of class

Curriculum

The teacher program includes a minimum of 600 clock hours of instruction.
An approved program for a "500-hour Teacher Training Course" based on 2 years of practical experience as a hair braider is available and consists of the same teacher training curriculum with the exception of the 100 hours of post-graduate training.

STUDENT TEACHING (260 clock hours)

100 hours of Post-Graduate School Training that includes subjects in the basic curriculum:

  • history of hair braiding;

  • disinfection and sanitation;

  • bacteriology;

  • disorders and diseases of the hair and scalp;

  • personal hygiene, public health; 

  • professional ethics. 


20 hours of Educational Psychology that include the followings topics: 

  • educational objectives, 

  • student characteristics and development, 

  • the learning process and an evaluation of learning that relates to teaching.   


20 hours of Teaching Methods including:

  • individual differences in learning, 

  • lesson planning and design, 

  • lesson delivery, 

  • assessment of learning performance,

  • classroom management, 

  • student motivation, 

  • classroom climate.   


150 hours of Application of Teaching Methods that includes:

  • preparation and organization of subject matter to be presented on a unit by unit basis 

  • presentation of subject matter through application of varied methods (lecture, demonstration, testing and assignments).  


50 hours of Business Methods that includes:

  • inventory, 

  • recordkeeping, 

  • interviewing, 

  • supplies, 

  • the Illinois Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Hair Braiding, and Nail Technology Act of 1985 and this Part.

  • A student may practice student teaching only after completing 20 hours of Educational Psychology and 20 hours of Teaching Methods. 


  • Student Teaching under the on-site supervision of a qualified teacher 


  • The student teacher have to present theoretical and practical demonstrations to students in the basic curriculum.


Always follow the hours of basic students enrolled during the period.

Requirements to get a Hair Braider Teacher License

To be qualified to receive a Hair Braider Teacher License in the State of Illinois, you have meet the following qualifications:


  • File an application on forms provided by the Department; 


  • Pay the required fees; 


  • Be at least 16 years of age;


  • Be beyond the age of compulsory school attendance or have received a certificate of graduation from a school providing secondary education, or the recognized equivalent of that certificate;


  • Have completed at least 600 clock hours or a 20 credit hour equivalency in relevant teaching methods and curriculum content, or at least 500 clock hours of hair braiding teacher training for an individual who is able to establish that he or she has had at least 2 years of practical experience.


By the time you complete our curriculum you might be requiere to pass a Board of certificate in Illinois State.
